چکیده

In this paper, we create synthetic artifacts that are perceived to be predominantly blocky, blurry or noisy. We present them alone or in various combinations and have subjects rate the perceived strength of each artifact and the overall annoyance of the combined artifacts. We found that a simple linear model with no interactions predicted how the perceived artifacts combine to determine overall annoyance. The estimated coefficients indicate that, when the artifacts are equated in perceived strength, blurriness contributes the most to annoyance followed by noise and then blockiness, although the relative weights of blockiness and noise vary with the video content.

Perceptual contributions of blocky, blurry, noisy, and ringing synthetic artifacts to overall annoyance

To develop a no-reference video quality model, it is important to know how the perceived strengths of artifacts are related to their physical strengths and to the perceived annoyance. When more than one artifact is present, it is important to know whether and how its corresponding perceived strength depends on the presence of other artifacts and how perceived strengths combine to determine the ...

Perceptual contributions of blocky, blurry, and fuzzy impairments to overall annoyance

In this work, we used two types of impairments in a psychophysical experiment to measure the overall annoyance and individual strength of three impairment features (fuzzy, blocky, and blurry). The impairments were generated by compressing the original videos with MPEG-2 at two different bitrates: 1.0 and 7.5 Mbps. The heavily compressed videos presented blurry and blocky impairments, while the ...

Adaptive Deblocking of Images with DCT Compression

The discrete cosine transform (DCT) is widely used in image and video coding schemes. By applying the DCT to image blocks and quantizing the DCT coefficients, efficient image compression can be achieved. However, the quantization of the DCT coefficients introduces errors in the decompressed images, which appear as blocky artifacts. The blocky artifacts can be converted into “Gaussian-type” nois...

Blind Measurement of Blocking Artifacts in Images

The objective measurement of blocking artifacts plays an important role in the design, optimization, and assessment of image and video coding systems. We propose a new approach that can blindly measure blocking artifacts in images without reference to the originals. The key idea is to model the blocky image as a non-blocky image interfered with a pure blocky signal. The task of the blocking eff...

An Efficient Curvelet Framework for Denoising Images

Wiener filter suppresses noise efficiently. However, it makes the out image blurred. Curvelet preserves the edges of natural images perfectly, but, it produces visual distortion artifacts and fuzzy edges to the restored image, especially in homogeneous regions of images. In this paper, a new image denoising framework based on Curvelet transform and wiener filter is proposed, which can stop nois...
